Lakers interested in another former Laker

I was just talking to my buddies about this the other day, I think we need someone familiar with the offense and who will definitely play and get solid minutes.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and coach Phil Jackson remain quiet on what, if anything, the team plans to do about fortifying the backcourt situation that was weakened when guard Jordan Farmar went down with a knee injury.

Farmar routinely wanders onto the court, after the Lakers’ practices, but in all likelihood he won’t be ready to play again until after next month’s All-Star break.

Team spokesman John Black recently said that the team would not sign anyone simply to sit on the bench. But sources close to the team told me that the Lakers are keeping a close watch on the status of former Lakers guard Chucky Atkins, who is with the Denver Nuggets.

Atkins has played in 14 of Denver’s 36 games and is averaging 1.9 points and 2.0 assists. Denver has been dumping players and purging their roster since last summer to avoid a hefty luxury tax hit. They have made more deals than a harried swap-meet merchant.

It is possible that the Nuggets might trim the roster ever more before Saturday, when all NBA contracts become guaranteed for the season.
